8.11.24 - Short North Gathering Liturgy

Short North Sunday Gathering Liturgy - August 11, 2024

Carry Sunday with you into your week by pausing to reflect on the readings, prayers, and songs we shared in together as the body of Christ.

CONFESSION

Prayer:

Lord God, our egos are relentless.
We desire more and more, always focused on me, me, me.
Sometimes this gets us what we think we want in the short term, but always in the long term leaves us feeling empty, inadequate, and bitter.

We turn out our idols before you, Lord!
Melt them down, grind them to dust, free us from their clutches.

Release our death-grips on money- the ways we always need more. Free us from the heavy burden that comes from gaining and wielding power and materialism to make us secure, yet numb and hollow.

You remove our heavy yokes and give us light ones to carry. As the psalmist writes: “How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands.”

Your commands are love- in obeying them we discover it is more blessed to give than to receive.

May we become a community of givers, as we look to our teacher, Jesus, who held nothing back in giving to us.

Holy Spirit, we pray, draw near to us!

COMMITMENT

Leader: Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—

Congregation: In order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Based on 1 Peter 4:7-11

BENEDICTION

Leader: May the God who fills us with the power of his very presence go before you, stir within you, speak to you and through you, and expel any anxiety, restlessness, bitterness, fear, and stinginess you harbor, equipping you with abundant faith, hope, and love.
Peace be with you!

Congregation: And also with you!
